Gardena Serra’s boys and girls 4x400 relays recorded the fastest times at the state prelims in Clovis and their performances made the Cavaliers favorites to sweep the team titles in Saturday’s finals.

Randall Bennette, Ronny Hall, Adoree Jackson and Darrell Fuery clocked 3:14.60 to win the third heat and beat the time of 3:16.40 run in the previous heat by West Hills Chaminade, which won the Masters Meet in a state-leading 3:15.28 last week. Vista Murrieta (3:16.16) also won its heat and Oxnard Rio Mesa, Carson, Bellflower St. John Bosco and Woodland Hills Taft also advanced.

Earlier, Jackson had competed in the long jump and was the top qualifier at 24 feet, 2 inches.

Serra’s foursome of Magan George, Kayah Agudo, Maya Brown and Renetia James clocked 3:46.43 to win their heat and place first overall out of 28 teams in the girls 4x400. Inglewood St. Mary’s Academy had the second-fastest overall time (3:48.53) and Studio City Harvard-Westlake posted a time of 3:49.60 to win its heat and take third overall. Long Beach Poly was leading its heat but got disqualified for lane interference.

Other Southern Section teams making the 4x400 finals were Temecula Great Oak, Westlake Village Oaks Christian and Corona Roosevelt.
