Track & Field: Muhammad qualifies first in sprints

Junior Khalfani Muhammad of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame was the fastest qualifier in the boys 100 and 200 meter preliminaries at the CIF State Track & Field Championships in Clovis.

Muhammad clocked a state-leading 10.44 seconds to win the second of three heats in the 100. Knights teammate Eric McDaniel won the first heat in 10.56, third overall. Senior Blake Selig of Oxnard Rio Mesa was fifth overall in 10.61 and Herbert Gamboa of San Clemente also qualified at 10.62.

In the 200, Muhammad ran 21.16 to win the first heat. Senior Devonte O’Connor of Los Angeles Locke won his heat and qualified fourth overall in 21.62. Los Angeles Loyola junior Morgan Simon was fifth in 21.39 and also advanced to the finals along with Ontario Colony senior Kyree King (21.50), Elijah Mitchell of Corona Roosevelt (21.52) and Glendale’s Michael Davis, whose time of 21.67 was good enough to nab the last spot.
