Boys’ basketball: El Camino Real serves notice with win over Mater Dei

Stanley Johnson was away playing for the U17 national team, but that doesn’t take away from El Camino Real’s accomplishment on Thursday night knocking off Santa Ana Mater Dei, 74-62, in a quarterfinal game of the Fairfax tournament.

Elijah Brown and Jordan Strawberry were there for the Monarchs. So was Lakers Coach Mike Brown watching his son play. But El Camino Real has an improving group of players that are maturing after winning a City Section Division II championship.

Evan Wardlow, known more for his all-out defense, contributed 18 points. Julian Richardson hit some big shots and finished with 17 points. Michael Thomas had 12 points and Cris Francis 11. Brown finished with 31 points for Mater Dei.

El Camino Real will face powerful Long Beach Poly on Friday night at 6 p.m. in a semifinal game. Mater Deil will play Trinity League rival Orange Lutheran in a 4:30 p.m. consolation game.
