Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, considered perhaps the No. 1 volleyball team in the nation, was on the verge of going down to Oak Park on Saturday night in the Division II Southern California Regional championship at Irvine Valley College.

The Mustangs trailed, 13-10, in set five, but found a way to rally and pulled out a 20-18 victory to win the championship in Division II.

USC-bound Chris Orenic led Mira Costa with 33 kills. Oak Park, the Southern Section Division 2 champion, received a strong performance from Jason Parks.

Oak Park took the first set, Mira Costa won the next two, then Oak Park won the fourth set, 26-24, to force a fifth set.

‘It’s a big sigh of relief,’ Orenic said. ‘They played so well.’
