Football: Gardena Serra is loaded with talent again
The days with Robert Woods, Marqise Lee and George Farmer, all now at USC, made Gardena Serra one of the best football teams in the state. Now the Cavaliers are loading up on young talent again.
When college coaches visit this spring, their excitement will be plenty. Serra started six sophomores last season, and added another outstanding sophomore via transfer, so look for Cavaliers to return to top-10 material this fall.
Leading the way is corneback Adoree Jackson, who has athleticism similar to Woods, according to Coach Scott Altenberg. Jackson has the sixth-best long jump in the nation at 23-5 1/2. Linebacker Dwight Williams, 6 feet 1, 210 pounds, already has scholarship offers. Quarterback Jalen Greene has grown to 6-2 and was last season's Mission League MVP.
Then there's Carson transfer Jordan Lasley, a receiver whose 100-meter times keep dropping. And the Cavaliers return senior-to-be Anterio Bateman at running back. When he's healthy, he runs wild.
Serra has scheduled games against Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa and Harbor City Narbonne, plus gets to face West Hills Chaminade in league play.
Let me be the first to say: Serra is back.
