Two of the fiercest rivals in City Section baseball are scheduled to meet this week for first place in the Valley Mission League.

Granada Hills Kennedy and defending City Division I champion San Fernando are both 8-0 in league play. Kennedy is to host the first encounter on Monday, with San Fernando becoming the home team on Thursday.

San Fernando Coach Armando Gomez has been known to get a little excited for games against Kennedy, but he insisted, ‘I’m even keel. That’s my new image.’

Kennedy Coach Manny Alvarado has to be excited, because the Golden Cougars want to prove they are one of the top teams in the City.

Kennedy pitchers have thrown six five-inning no-hitters in league play. They’ll try to hand sophomore Alonzo Garcia (9-0) his first defeat. Pablo Gonzalez is expected to start on the mound Monday for Kennedy.

These games bring out the alumni en force. It’s going to come down to throwing strikes, playing good defense and getting someone to deliver a hit in the clutch.
