Baseball: It’s time for a Kennedy-San Fernando showdown

The practice games are over and the real season begins in the Valley Mission League, with Granada Hills Kennedy (14-6, 8-0) set to take on San Fernando (21-4, 8-0) in a two-game showdown beginning Monday at Kennedy and Thursday at San Fernando.

Both teams continued to dominate their other league opponents on Thursday. Kennedy defeated Van Nuys, 11-0, in five innings. Moises Ceja allowed one hit. Freshman Anthony Rios hit two doubles.

San Fernando defeated Canoga Park, 23-0, in five innings. Alonzo Garcia improved to 9-0.

It’s going to be Pablo Gonzalez of Kennedy taking on Garcia on Monday.

In the Western League on Thursday, Hamilton completed a two-game sweep of University with a 3-2 victory in eight innings. Marc Huberman struck out 12, including nine of the first 10 batters. The Yankees scored a run in the seventh to tie and won it in the eighth.

In the East Valley League, Ray Carranza hit a two-run home run and finished with four hits in Verdugo Hills’ 6-2 win over Arleta. Alex Morales homered for Arleta. Verdugo Hills is 15-9 and 7-1 in league.
