The graduation of Henry Owens (minor league), Eric Snyder-Filia (UCLA) and Christian Lopes (minor league) had people thinking that Huntington Beach Edison might be in for a long season in 2012.

Look who’s in first place in the Sunset League: Edison at 6-2.

Tim Lopes, the younger brother of Christian who signed with UC Irvine, is having his best season in high school, batting .480 as the starting shortstop. Junior pitcher Tyler Jones has given up two earned runs in four league games. Sophomore Brian Schales is hitting .340.

Coach Steve Lambright’s team is only 8-10 overall, but there were close losses to good teams _ El Toro, Long Beach Wilson and Pacifica.

So don’t count out the Chargers from being a factor in the Division 1 playoffs. There’s only one senior _ Lopes _ in the starting lineup, and they’re a young team getting better.
