Girls' basketball: Nirra Fields is Gatorade state player of the year
UCLA-bound Nirra Fields of Santa Ana Mater Dei has been named the Gatorade state player of the year in girls' basketball.
The 5-foot-10 senior guard led the Monarchs to the Southern Section Division 1AA championship. Fields is averaging 22.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 2.4 assists.
She came to Mater Dei this season after playing last year in Virginia.
She's the second Mater Dei player to receive the award. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was honored in the 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons.
