Girls’ basketball: Mater Dei 29, Berkeley 18

Santa Ana Mater Dei has taken command of its CIF Division I state final against Berkeley, outscoring the Yellowjackets 14-2 in the second quarter to take a 29-18 halftime lead.

UCLA-bound Nirra Fields has 14 points and three assists and Jordan Adams has seven points and two steals for the defending Southern Section Division IAA and state champion Monarchs, who are 13 of 31 from the floor, but only one of seven from three-point range.

Berkeley, the North Coast Section champion, managed only two free throws by Arizona State signee Elisha Davis in the last eight minutes of the first half. Rachel Howard and Jasmin Guinn have five points apiece for the Yellowjackets.
