Girls' basketball: Berkeley 16, Mater Dei 15

March 24, 2012 |  6:41 pm

_3247221The CIF Division I state championship game is now underway at Power Balance Pavilion and defending champion Santa Ana Mater Dei trails Berkeley 16-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The backdrop in the NBA arena, which is home to the Sacramento Kings, frequently causes teams to shoot poorly. While neither side was particularly accurate from three-point distance, each got its fair share of layups and putbacks. Senior guard Nirra Fields leads the Monarchs' attack.

After a slow start, Mater Dei has begun to score inside and that does not bode well for Berkeley.
