Girls’ basketball: Arroyo Grande takes 3AAA title

Arroyo Grande used stifling defense to build a 17-point lead early in the third quarter, then coasted to a 45-32 victory over Oxnard Rio Mesa in the Southern Section Division 3AAA championship game at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Lindsey Wolf had 17 points, Heather Madrigal had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Alexa Wetmore had eight points and five assists for the third-seeded Eagles (25-5), who have won 18 consecutive games. Arroyo Grande took charge of the game in the second quarter, outscoring Rio Mesa 12-0 to build a 25-11 halftime lead.

Ashley Ontiveros had 11 points, Ashley Rodriguez had nine points and Riley Abraham pulled down 14 rebounds for the fourth-seeded Spartans (25-6), who made just 8 of 34 field goals (23.5%), including 3 of 17 three-pointers.
