Boys' basketball: Wright brothers lead Mayfair to 2A championship

March 3, 2012 |  9:14 pm

Down, 16-8, after the first quarter, brothers Dion and Brian Wright combined to score 20 of their team's 24 points in the second quarter, and top-seeded Lakewood Mayfair (26-5) went on to a 60-45 victory over Santa Maria Righetti in the Southern Section 2A championship game at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Mayfair outscored Righetti, 24-5, in the second quarter and was never threatened the rest of the way. Dio, a 6-foot-7 senior, scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds. Brian, a 6-2 junior, had 13 points. Marcus Harden added 10 points.

"We didn't start the game the way we wanted to," Coach Tony Davis said. "They did a good job breaking our press. We made some adjustments."

Mayfair switched to a full-court man-to-man defense, and Righetti (26-5) faced problems.
