After winning its Southern Section title since 1996, Playa del Rey St. Bernard has its sights on a state Division V championship after finishing as the runner-up last season after a 47-44 defeat by St. Joseph’s Notre Dame.

Coach Reggie Morris’ team is seeded No. 1 in the Southern California regionals.

‘The team is making progress,’ Morris said.

Morris didn’t think his team deserved to be a top 25 squad to start the season, but he does now.

‘I did believe we’d be one of the better schools at the end,’ he said.

St. Bernard is 23-7 and features 6-foot-3 junior guard Brandon Randolph, who is averaging 18.5 points a game.

‘He’s played steady the whole season,’ Morris said.

The Vikings got 26 points from Jalen Walker in the 5AA championship game, an 81-67 victory over Ribet Academy.
