Boys’ basketball: Loyola takes charge in fourth quarter to beat Etiwanda

After there were six lead changes in the third quarter that ended in a 29-29 tie, Loyola went on a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter, with Julian Harrell leading the way, and the Cubs went on to secure a 48-35 victory over Etiwanda in a quarterfinal game of the Division I Southern California Regionals.

Loyola will play Mater Dei on Tuesday night. Mater Dei defeated Mission Viejo, 78-66, with Xavier Johnson scoring 28 points and Jordan Strawberry 15. Katin Reinhardt didn’t play because of a hand injury.

Harrell, held to one point in the first half, finished with 13 points. Also coming up big in the fourth quarter was senior Jacob Hazzard. He had all nine of his points in the fourth quarter.

Parker Cartwright scored 13 points for the Cubs. Jordan McLaughlin led Etiwanda with 10 points.

Long Beach Poly defeated Orange Lutheran, 70-62, and will play Fresno Bullard in its semifinal.

In Division II, despite 23 points from sophomore Maleke Haynes and 17 from sophomore Julian Richardson, El Camino Real was beaten by La Costa Canyon, 74-63.

In Division III, St. John Bosco defeated Calabasas, 75-71, in overtime to earn a semifinal game against Pasadena. Isaac Hamilton had 33 points. Jeremy Lieberman and Spencer Levy had 23 points apiece for Calabasas. Oak Park lost in double overtime to Cathedral Catholic despite Ron Lee Jr. making a half-court shot to send the game into the second overtime. Lee finished with 34 points.

Top-seeded Alemany defeated Arroyo Grande, 62-50. Max Guercy had 24 points and made five three-pointers. Bear Henderson had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Matt Wilkomm led Arroyo Grande with 18 points.

In Division IV, JaQuan Green scored 17 points to lead Price past La Jolla Country Day, 67-51. Price will face La Verne Lutheran in the semifinals. Lutheran defeated Central Valley Christian, 57-42. Grant Jerrett scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds. Eric Cooper Jr. had 15 points.

Pacific Hills rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat Crespi, 62-54. Namon Wright scored 22 points and Brandon Taylor 16. Michael Milligan Jr. had 16 for Crespi. Serra defeated Francis Parker, 53-31.

In Division V, sophomore Bryan Alberts scored 24 points, including two free throws with seven seconds left, to help Village Christiand defeat Mission Prep, 59-56.
