Baseball: No. 2 Mater Dei pulls out 5-4 win over Bishop Amat

A passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning scored the winning run, helping No. 2-ranked Santa Ana Mater Dei defeat Bishop Amat, 5-4, in a big-time season opener on Thursday night at Mater Dei.

Freshman Brandon Perez, in his high school debut, had two triples for the Monarchs, who also got two hits apiece from Ryan McMahon and Jeremy Martinez.

Scott Hurst hit a two-run home run for Bishop Amat.

Esperanza defeated JSerra, 9-8. Nick Catalano and Mark Tumlinson had two RBIs apiece for Esperanza.
