Baseball: Kevin Lavalle earns his 100th win as Beckman coach

It was a dramatic victory on Tuesday for Irvine Beckman, enabling Coach Kevin Lavalle to earn his 100th career victory since taking over the program in 2008.

James Kaprielian, pitching in relief, got leadoff hitter Brandon Smith to ground out with the tying run on second base. Beckman held on for a 5-4 victory over Woodbridge. Grant Barring was three for three and Garrett Brown had three hits.

Lavalle is 100-28 at Beckman and has guided the team to three consecutive Pacific Coast League championships.

In a Hacienda League opener, Justin Garza struck out 10 in Bonita’s 6-1 win over Diamond Ranch. He also had three hits. Tyler Heslop went three for three. Bonita is 7-1 overall.

In the Moore League, Chase DeJong had a home run and triple in a 12-2 Long Beach Wilson win over Long Beach Cabrillo. Long Beach Poly defeated Compton, 20-0. Lakewood defeated Long Beach Jordan, 8-1.

In the Channel League, Isaac Horigan (5-0) threw his fifth consecutive complete game in Buena’s 2-1 win over San Marcos. He struck out eight and walked none. Dos Pueblos defeated Santa Barbara, 9-0. Luke Loggins threw five shutout innings. Brett Patton had a home run and double.

Gardena Serra defeated Mary Star, 15-4, in five innings. Palm Desert opened Desert Valley League play with a 4-2 win over Indio. Jonathan Serven had two hits and two RBIs.
