Baseball: Freshman standouts lead Hart, West Ranch to win

Let the debate begin over who has the best freshman infielder in the Foothil League, Hart or West Ranch?

On Wednesday, freshman Dayton Provost had three hits in Hart's 7-4 victory over Valencia. Freshman Jagger Rusconi hit a grand slam in West Ranch's 11-5 victory over Golden Valley. Both schools are 3-0 in league.

Hart rallied from a 4-2 deficit with a five-run fifth. CJ Witkowski had the key hit, a two-run double. Baggy Saldivar added two hits.

In the Century League, Esperanza (8-2, 5-0) got an eighth-inning two-run home run from Kevin Viers to defeat Anaheim Canyon, 4-2.

In the South Coast League, El Toro (10-1, 2-0) defeated Capistrano Valley, 7-1. Junior Kyle Goodbrand threw a three-hitter in Tesoro's 5-0 win over Dana Hills. Eric Hutting, Brett Halasz and Riley Greenlee had two hits apiece for Tesoro (8-2-1, 2-0).

Moorpark received 5 1/3 innings of no-hit pitching from Sean Berry in a 9-3 win over Oklahoma Broken Arrow in the Perfect Game tournament.Taylor Ready had a two-run home run. Blake Chiaramonte went three for four.

L.A. Cathedral defeated Cantwell-Sacred Heart, 10-0. Five pitchers combined for a no-hitter with 10 strikeotus. Chris Flores had two hits. Ayala defeated Charter Oak, 6-1. Evan Kantor hit a home run in Sierra Canyon's 16-5 win over St. Michaels.

Oaks Christian defeated Malibu, 17-9. Brandon Evans, Jack Kruger, Nate Palace and Austin Sreden all had three hits.

In the City Section, Birmingham defeated Grace Brethren, 2-0, behind Jesus Pizano (2-0). Steven Rodriguez got the save. Daniel Gomez had two hits. Cleveland defeated Calabasas, 9-2. Andrew Devian led a 15-hit attack with three hits.

North Hollywood defeated Sun Valley, 19-1. Zane Weston had two hits. Andrew Marmor drove in four runs. Grant defeated Arleta, 5-4.
