Baseball: Erik Magdaleno gets shutout for Banning

Erik Magdaleno, the Marine League player of the year as a junior, came through for Wilmington Banning on Thursday, throwing a complete game in the Pilots’ 2-0 victory over Bellflower in the El Segundo tournament.

San Fernando defeated L.A. Cathedral, 2-1, in eight innings on a bases loaded walk. Alonzo Garcia struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings for San Fernando. Julian Perez went 7 2/3 innings for Cathedral.

Long Beach Wilson improved to 5-1 with a 3-2 victory over El Modena. Junior left-hander Mike Semonsen picked up his third win of the season, striking out five. Chase DeJong got his first save. El Modena’s David Hill allowed three unearned runs in the first inning and went on to strike out 10.

Streaking St. John Bosco improved to 7-0 with a 7-4 victory over Narbonne. Omar Maldonado threw four scoreless innings of relief for the Braves. Isaac Padilla had a double and single for Narbonne.

L.A. University improved to 6-1 with a 6-3 win over Verdugo Hills. Marlowe Leal and Anthony Chavez each had three hits.

Steven Rodriguez raised his record to 3-0 by pitching six innings in Birmingham’s 4-2 win over Sylmar. Manny Granillo broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run double in the seventh.

Palm Desert defeated Esperanza, 6-4, to advance to Friday’s championship game of the Newport Elks tournament. Brooks Kriske allowed one run in six innings. Kriske, John Schuknecht, Jonathan Serven and Brody Kato had two hits apiece.
