There’s a proposal in the planning stage from the Orange County-based Coast View Conference that would seek to separate private and public schools during Southern Section playoff competition.

Mission Viejo Athletic Director Coach Troy Roelen, who also is the Diablos basketball coach, has been preparing a plan for the principals who make up the Sea View and South Coast leagues. It would have to be sent for approval to the Southern Section Council, which is made up of all the leagues in the section.

But there are plenty of obstacles ahead, including a legal opinion submitted by the CIF several years ago that separating public and private schools during playoff competition wouldn’t hold up to a legal challenge.

In other words, get ready for more money to be spent on lawyers.

Any proposal would be the first big test for new Commissioner Rob Wigod, because it surely will be controversial and divide the membership.
