Girls’ basketball: Johnson’s layup forces overtime

Alemany’s Hannah Johnson has made a put-back basket at the buzzer to send the Southern Section Division 3AA final into overtime.

Celia Marfone’s driving bank shot gave Laguna Hills a 45-43 lead with six seconds left to go, after a timeout, Alex Moon launched a desperation three-pointer from just beyond halfcourt. It missed, but Johnson got the rebound and made a layup as time expired. Laguna Hills players started celebrating, thinking they had won.

One referee thought the shot didn’t beat the clock, but another said it did. The officials conferred at the scorer’s table and eventually ruled the basket good.
