Boys’ basketball: The City champion in 2013 or 2014 will be Westchester

Let me make an easy prediction: The City Section Division I champion in basketball in 2013 or 2014 will be Westchester High.

The Comets have a junior varsity team that is filled with impressive freshmen and sophomores. They’re 22-1 and one of the best JV teams I’ve seen through the years.

Emilio Ariza, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, is the cousin of NBA player Trevor Ariza. Freshman guards Akil Reese and Damian Wilson are future varsity standouts. And there are lots of other future varsity contributors on the team.

Coach Ed Azzam smartly decided to keep the group together and build from within, and it’s going to pay off down the road.
