Taft was cruising along, leading by 21 points in the second quarter and 12 points in the fourth quarter of the City Section Division I semifinal against Crenshaw. Then the Cougars got hot and gave the Toreadors a scare before Taft prevailed, 64-63, at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Anthony January scored 25 points and Kris Yanku and Steven Jones added 14 apiece.

Andre Edwards scored 12 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter for Crenshaw. His three-pointer with six seconds left brought the Cougars within a single point.

‘I feel we got lackadaisical when we took the lead,’ Yanku said. ‘They started hitting shots. The game turned around. They kept fighting and didn’t give up and started hitting threes and getting easy baskets. We pulled it out. All we got is a W. That’s all I care about.’

While Crenshaw failed in its comeback, Dorsey succeeded. The Dons were down, 20-3, in the first quarter, trailed by 15 points at halftime and came back to defeat Westchester, 62-59, in the other semifinal. Dorsey will play Taft in next Saturday’s Division I final.
