Boys’ basketball: Southern Section officials to work City playoff games

Get ready for big changes in the City Section basketball playoffs.

Southern Section officials will be working City Section games after a decision made by the officials committee of the City Section Interscholastic Athletic Committee to have the City unit join the Southern Section officials rotation. There will be 13 units now for the Southern Section and City Section to use for playoffs, and officials are assigned outside of their normal areas.

It means City officials will work Southern Section games and vice versa, according to City assistant commissioner Trent Cornelius.

‘It’s to keep a fresh perspective of the competition,’ Cornelius said.

It should be interesting for the reaction of Southern Section teams getting officials from the City unit and vice versa.

One complaint has been the elite City officials were working and seeing the same top teams year after year.

Cornelius said he expects a mixed unit when the championships are held.
