No one can doubt that at Arroyo Grande High, there are some pretty good all-around athletes. How else to explain a Southern Section championship in football and now a final appearance in 3AAA in basketball?

The Eagles won their semifinal road game against Palm Desert, 51-44.

Matt Willkomm came through with eight points in the fourth quarter. Brent VanderVeen had 18 points. It’s the first CIF championship basketball game for Arroyo Grande since 1970.

The Eagles will face a tough task, taking on Pasadena in the final.

Another surprising team is Thousand Oaks, which has reached the 2AA semifinals with a starting lineup of all juniors. The Lancers defeated Riverside Poly, 54-38, in the quarterfinals and will next face Inglewood.
