No teams in the Southern Section should complain about road trips when comparing what Arroyo Grande will be doing.

The Eagles are leaving at 11:30 a.m. Thursday for a six-hour, 308-mile trip to Palm Desert. They will stay Thursday night in a hotel and play Palm Desert on Friday night in a Division 3AAA semifinal, then return on Saturday morning.

They’re taking two vans that will be driven by coaches.

‘We must be excellent drivers,’ Coach Ryan Glanville said. ‘They trust us to take district vans.’

Arroyo Grande won a section title in football, and five of those players are on the basketball team, including standout 6-foot-5 quarterback Brent VanderVeen, who has a scholarship to Oregon State.

‘He’s a great athlete,’ Glanville said.

Also on the team is Oregon State-bound kicker Garrett Owens, who still hasn’t kicked a basketball yet.

Asked if Owens has permission to kick a basketball if the team wins its first CIF basketball title, Glanville said, ‘I’ll be glad to let him do that if we win. He can drop kick it.’
