Owen Start, a sophomore pitcher for the La Habra Sonora junior varsity team, was struck in the head by a foul ball earlier this month. Ice was applied, and he was taken to the hospital to get a precautionary CT scan.

It might have saved his life. The scan found a brain tumor that had nothing to do with getting hit in the head by the foul ball. He had surgery, the tumor was benign and he’s expected to make a full recovery, though his sophomore baseball season is probably over.

‘Everyone was saying, ‘Good thing you got hit by a foul ball,’’ varsity Coach Pat Tellers said.
