Baseball: Buena serves notice that it is a team on the rise

There could be a new baseball powerhouse in Ventura County. Buena is off to a 3-0 start, with its latest victory a 9-0 triumph over defending City Section Division I champion San Fernando.

That means second-year Coach Mark Magdaleno has already beaten three veteran coaches _ Steve Thompson at Granada Hills, 2-1; Tom Dill at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 6-0, and Armando Gomez at San Fernando.

Isaac Horigan, a senior pitcher headed to Iowa, threw a no-hitter while striking out eight and walking four in a complete-game performance in the Southern California Invitational. He’s 2-0 and hasn’t given up an earned run in 14 innings. Buena will face Birmingham at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

Three freshmen pitchers combined to strike out 13 in Cathedral’s 10-2 win over Garfield. Freshman Willie Aguilar went three for four with three stolen bases.

Granada Hills defeated Golden Valley, 6-1. Collin Dudley had two hits and two RBIs. Joe Goring had two hits, including a triple. Birmingham is 3-0 after a 4-3 win over Palisades. Robert Ramos had a double and home run. Daniel Rivas threw two shutout innings to get the save.

Sierra Canyon defeated Grant, 6-0. Brian Tucker threw a two-hitter, striking out 10. Culver City defeated Taft, 6-5.

Notre Dame defeated Sun Valley Poly, 13-1, in five innings. Brett Sesma had a two-run home run. Van Nuys defeated Fulton Prep, 19-0. Leo Alcala struck out 11 in five innings. Vladimir Duran went four for five with four RBIs.

Charter Oak defeated Orange Lutheran, 11-3.

North Hollywood improved to 3-0 with a 7-4 win over St. Monica. Sebastian Piscuskas had 11 strikeouts in six innings.
