The college beat writers will soon be writing about another Los Angeles product who got away. Freshman Spencer Dinwiddie, last season’s City Section player of the year from Woodland Hills Taft, scored 19 points in his Pac-12 debut for Colorado.

He has grown to 6 feet 5. He’s going to make the All-Pac-12 freshman team. And people will be asking why UCLA, which hasn’t signed a top point guard in years, didn’t go after Dinwiddie.

Well, UCLA did -- too late. The Bruins focused on bigger national names, and by the time they decided Dinwiddie would be good enough for them, he was gone.
