Boys’ basketball: JR Powell gets hot and leads Royal to victory

Scoreless through three quarters, JR Powell made three three-pointers in the fourth quarter to help Simi Valley Royal break a 38-38 tie and come away with a 62-51 victory over host Westlake Village Westlake in a game for second place in the Marmonte League.

Scott Woods, a 6-foot-9 junior center, scored 22 points for the Highlanders (12-5, 4-1). Joshua Brooks, a junior guard, scored 18 points for Westlake (14-6, 3-2). Calabasas remained in first place after a 71-46 win over Newbury Park. Holden Israel scored 23 points. Simi Valley defeated Agoura, 63-60.

In the Mission League, Loyola (12-2, 1-2) defeated Chaminade, 77-60. Parker Cartwright had 15 points. Jack Williams had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Chaminade. Alemany (14-2, 3-0) set up a Wednesday showdown with Crespi by defeating St. Francis, 79-69. Marqueze Coleman had 26 points and 10 rebounds. Max Guercy added 16 points and Jerico Richardson 15. Bear Henderson had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

In the Western League, Westchester defeated University, 81-51. James Brown led the Comets with 14 points. University was without top scorer Malik Spears, who was injured. Fairfax defeated Venice, 65-37. Chaunce Hill scored 16 points and Landon Drew had 11 points and eight assists.

In the Alpha League, Pacific Hills defeated Sierra Canyon, 69-25. Brandon Taylor scored 27 points.

In the Pacific League, Pasadena Muir (14-1, 3-0) defeated Burbank, 52-50. Taturs Mayberry scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds.

La Verne Lutheran (13-4), ranked No. 1 in 4AA, defeated Westminster, 55-33. Grant Jerrett had 18 points and Eric Cooper 16 points.
