Thanks to the organizers of the Newport Elks tournament, baseball fans won’t need to search the Internet to figure out what is the best tournament opener. It’s on March 1 when Santa Ana Mater Dei hosts La Puente Bishop Amat in a 6 p.m. game matching preseason top 10 teams.

UCLA signee Ty Moore should be on the mound for Mater Dei taking on USC commit Rio Ruiz, an expected first-round draft pick who plays third or shortstop. Bishop Amat ace Daniel Zamora should be ready to go. Two potential Southern Section championship teams playing under the lights.

Mater Dei returns seven starters, including junior catcher Jeremy Martinez, a USC commit who won a gold medal over the summer for the U.S. 18U national team. Bishop Amat is loaded with top young and veteran players.

Let the hype begin.
