Earlier in the week, Fresno Washington head coach Jeff Freitas admitted he felt a little extra pressure to win after his team became the first from the Central Section selected for a state bowl game.

‘We’re carrying the torch for the whole section,’ Freitas said. ‘So we’re not going down just to participate; we’re going down to win.’

The Panthers are halfway home, leading Campolindo 14-3 after two quarters of the CIF state championship Division III bowl game at Home Depot Center in Carson. Washington took a 14-0 first-quarter lead on Deontay Greenberry’s 26-yard reception from Chris Cain and Cain’s three-yard run.

Campolindo, the North Coast Section champion, cut into the lead with a 28-yard field goal by Cristian Antezana early in the second quarter. The Cougars had a chance to pull even closer but quarterback Brett Stephens threw interceptions on their last two possessions.
