Football: Santa Margarita hangs on for 42-37 win

Santa Margarita won the Division I CIF state championship bowl game with a thrilling 42-37 victory over Bellarmine of San Jose at The Home Depot Center.

Johnny Stanton threw four touchdown passes and ran for two more for Santa Margarita, which drove 80 yards for the winning touchdown, which came on Stanton’s one-yard dive with 16 seconds left.

It is the third bowl championship victory for Santa Margarita Coach Harry Welch, who previously won the Division I title with Canyon Country Canyon in 2006 and the Small Schools title with San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret’s in 2008.
