Football: An historic coaching hire could be coming

There are no African American head coaches at any of the top private high school football programs in Southern California.

That could change, because Carson’s Elijah Asante has become a prime candidate for several openings.

Interviews are expected to take place soon at Studio City Harvard-Westlake and Santa Fe Springs St. Paul. Asante is likely to be considered at both schools.

And he’s a worthy candidate. He guided Carson to consecutive appearances in the City Section Division I final, and his teams have beaten Santa Ana Mater Dei the last two seasons.

He’s going to have to decide whether public or private schools are best for his future.
