Boys’ basketball: L.A. Windward holds on for win over Chaminade

Los Angeles Windward (1-1), ranked in The Times’ top 10 to begin the season, still isn’t playing up to that ranking but came away with a 57-50 victory over West Hills Chaminade in an opening game of the Santa Monica tournament.

Nicholas Stover scored 21 points and freshman Roy Hemsley contributed a basket and two free throws at a decisive point in the fourth quarter when Chaminade had rallied from a 43-32 deficit to pull within 45-44 with 2:35 left. Jordan Wilson, who helped the Windward football team win an eight-man title, had 13 points in his first basketball game of the season.

Jaron Martin scored 22 points for Chaminade (0-1). Los Angeles Price defeated Canoga Park, 96-46. Aaron Roseboro had 22 points. Fairfax defeated Palmdale, 61-48. Santa Monica defeated Cleveland, 60-47.

In the Westchester tournament, Brandon Perry scored 19 points and Kris Yanku 18 as Taft (2-0) defeated San Bernardino,64-54.

In the Crescenta Valley tournament, Simi Valley received 14 points from DJ Saul in a 68-37 win over Antelope Valley.

In the Canyon tournament, Crespi (2-0) defeated Panorama, 87-42. Michael Avery scored 20 points and Mike Milligan had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Grant defeated Quartz Hill, 72-67. Travis Wilson scored 18 points. Gurgen Harutyunyan had 16 points and six assists. Rodney Williams had 35 points for Quartz Hill. Granada Hills Kennedy defeated Paraclete, 61-43, with Jordan Taylor scoring 28 points.

In the L.A. University tournament, Sherman Oaks Buckley (3-0) defeated North Hollywood, 82-32. Astin Beal scored 21 points and had six assists and six steals.
