Boys’ basketball: Etiwanda is 11-1 and getting better

One of the most surprising teams in the opening month of the basketball season is Etiwanda, a longtime power that lost some key players to graduation but is off to an 11-1 start.

On Tuesday, the Eagles put down a strong challenge from Morningside to win, 60-51, in a first-round game of the Oaks Christian tournament. Etiwanda will face Eisenhower on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

It was a typical Etiwanda performance. Every possession down court was a battle. The Eagles play nothing but man-to-man defense, and even though Morningside had a 6-foot-10 center, Etiwanda used its helping defense to finally pull away in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Jordan McLaughlin led a balanced attack with 14 points. Sam Flemming, Brandon Townes and Dary Adigwu each scored 11 points. Demetrius Harris led Morningside (5-5) with 17 points.
