Santa Ana Mater Dei guard Nirra Fields, one of the top girls’ basketball players in the state, cannot play for the Monarchs unless she receives a hardship waiver from the Southern Section, according to Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons.

Fields, who signed with UCLA, transferred from Oak Hill Academy in Virginia and went to live with new Lakers Coach Mike Brown’s family.

But the Southern Section has determined Fields did not make a valid change of residence because she is not living with the legal guardian from her previous school.

Fields would need a hardship waiver for immediate eligibility. Otherwise, she is limited to junior varsity.

This latest skirmish with Mater Dei comes as a lawsuit by the school and the Diocese of Orange against the Southern Section remains on the docket for a February court date.
