A year ago, Gardena Serra and West Hills Chaminade engaged in quite an entertaining matchup to decide the Mission League title. Chaminade gave the George Farmer-Marqise Lee-led Cavaliers a big scare before losing, 35-21.

Farmer and Lee have moved on to USC, and now it’s payback time for Chaminade (8-1), which will try to win the Mission League title on Friday night at Serra (7-2).

Don’t think Serra is going to concede anything. The Cavaliers scored 70 points last week in a win over Studio City Harvard-Westlake. The offense is starting to come together, with an improved running game that features quarterback Jalen Greene and running backs Anterio Bateman and Ronnie Vaughn.

Bateman, however, suffered an ankle injury last week, so it could be Vaughn and freshman Malik Roberson taking over.

The challenge facing Serra is that Chaminade’s defensive line has been stuffing teams of late. And, if Serra can’t run the ball, the Cavaliers will be in trouble.

Chaminade has been a different team since suffering its only loss on Sept. 23 to Alemany, 38-14.

‘The Alemany game was a big wake-up call for us,’ quarterback Logan Scott said. ‘It showed how much work we had to put in to get to the end of the season goals we set at the beginning of the year.’
