Cross country: Saugus wins its sixth consecutive state girls’ title

The Saugus girls’ cross country team made history Saturday at the CIF state cross country championships at Woodward Park in Fresno, winning the Division II team title and coming away with its sixth consecutive state championship.

Sophomore Sarah Baxter of Simi Valley won her second consecutive individual title in Division II, running away with a time of 17:08, 31 seconds faster than her second-place finisher.

In Division I boys, Sergio Gonzalez of Arcadia won in 15:05. Trabuco Hills took the team title. In Division I girls, San Clemente won the team title.

In Division II boys, Santa Clarita Golden Valley won its first team title. In Division III girls, Palos Verdes won the team title.

Danny Martinez of St. John Bosco won the Division III boys’ individual title in 15:11 despite being sick in the morning and almost not running. Palos Verdes edged St. John Bosco for the team title.

In Division IV girls, JSerra won the team title. Harvard-Westlake’s Cami Chapus finished second.

In Division V boys, Billy Gaudreau led St. Margaret’s to the team title with a winning time of 15:28.
