For the first time in years, the competition to win a City Section Division I boys’ basketball championship is considered wide open.

The decision made Monday to declare Shaqquan Aaron ineligible at Taft only adds to the uncertainty.

Washington could be the team to beat if it gets Long Beach Jordan transfer Isaiah Hicks eligible. He’s a 6-foot-5 senior who would join returnees Ralph Harvey Jr. and Tajee Shaw.

Fairfax has Landon Drew, West Adams transfer Taj Adams and at some point this season, could add Brendyn Taylor.

Taft still has Brandon Perry and Steven Jones and is waiting to find out if Compton transfer Anthony January will be eligible. Palisades returns four starters, led by guard Donovon Johnson. And don’t count out Westchester and veteran Coach Ed Azzam. The Comets return an outstanding guard duo in Keywhon Powns and Matthew Grant.
