Left-hander Max Fried of Studio City Harvard-Westlake had his first pitching appearance of the winter on Saturday at West Ranch against Santa Monica. He threw one inning and ended his appearance with a 95 mph fastball that struck out the batter.

Not bad for someone who was hit in the face by a 97 mph fastball from teammate Lucas Giolito during a scrimmage earlier in the week that left him with a black eye and injured nose.

Fried, who signed with UCLA, is expected to be a first-round draft pick in June, along with Giolito.
