Attention City Section basketball coaches: Stop making excuses for dropping freshman-sophomore basketball.

Yes, the stipends have been taken away to pay for coaching the teams in boys’ and girls’ basketball, but varsity coaches are stepping up to take over the programs or getting volunteers to coach.

However, some schools have dropped freshman-sophomore basketball, saying they have enough players to have a boys’ program but not enough for a girls’ program.

The City Section office says you can have a boys’ team but also must have a girls’ team. If you don’t have a girls’ team, then the freshman-sophomore team becomes a ‘student team’ open to all genders.

So there’s no excuse for not having freshman-sophomore teams in the City Section. If the girls’ coach doesn’t want to coach, then call it a ‘student team.’
