Venice fans have no reason to feel bad about their team starting 1-4, because the tough schedule has prepared the Gondoliers to make a run at the City Section Division I championship.

The record of Venice opponents is 22-4, and Venice played well against Bishop Amat, Helix, Chaminade and St. Francis in losses, and the Gondoliers defeated Harvard-Westlake, which has since won four in a row.

Sophomore quarterback Alexander Diamont is a star in the making, and receiver Gabriel Marks is one of the best in the City Section.

‘I like our team and like our chances,’ Coach Angelo Gasca said. ‘I wish we had a better record, but we don’t. I know it’s the only way we can compete for a City championship by playing a tough schedule.’

Venice opens Western League play on Thursday against Fairfax.
