Ryan Bailey, an assistant coach at Los Angeles Loyola, has been hired as the new basketball coach at Brentwood. He starts on Monday.

Bailey, 34, a former UCLA basketball player, has been considered one of the most highly regarded assistant coaches in the Southland while training under Loyola Coach Jamal Adams.

It’s a key hire for Brentwood, which is trying to keep pace with L.A. Windward, North Hollywood Campbell Hall, Chatsworth Sierra Canyon and Pacific Hills in the Alpha League.

Bailey said it was a tough decision to leave Loyola, because that’s where he went to school, and he has known Adams since he was 5.

‘Loyola is a magical place for me,’ he said.

But he said the opportunity to start a program at Brentwood is something he’s looking forward to.

‘I saw the same magic at Brentwood,’ he said.

He’s going to coach Loyola’s fall-league team one more time on Saturday at noon against La Verne Lutheran at LACES. The Loyola players want to send him out in style.
