With both teams close to full strength, the fall league basketball game on Saturday between Los Angeles Loyola and La Verne Lutheran made people forget that there’s an NBA lockout. Coaches and others left with the clear impression some of the players they saw at LACES might one day make it to the NBA.

Loyola came back from a nine-point deficit in the first half to win, 79-73. Julian Harrell, recently committed to Pennsylvania, led the comeback. He’s 6 feet 5 and too big for a guard to cover, too quick for a center and too tough for lots of forwards, so he’s going to be a defensive dilemma for teams.

Sophomore guard Parker Cartwright continues to grow, mature and gain confidence for the Cubs. But the key for Loyola was better depth and having lots of contributors, whether it was Jacob Hazzard firing in a jump shot or Khaliq Bedart-Ghani battling for a rebound.

The most impressive player on the court was Lutheran’s 6-9 Grant Jerrett, an Arizona commit who keeps getting better and better.

‘Grant Jerrett is going to be a pro,’ Loyola Coach Jamal Adams said. ‘I’m convinced of it. My favorite thing about him is he keeps playing irregardless good play, bad play. He never stops.’
