Bellflower St. John Bosco wants to be a factor in the Trinity League this season, and the Braves face a strong nonleague test on Friday from Lakewood, which opened with a 46-22 win over Locke.

St. John Bosco shut out Mission Hills, 27-0, with junior linebacker Christian Wehrly leading the team with 14 tackles.

‘He’s quickly going to start making a name for himself,’ Coach Jason Negro said of Wehrly, who was a starter last season as a sophomore.

Receiver Bryce Treggs caught eight passes for 169 yards and one touchdown. Running back Davonte Young, who sat out last season, rushed for 97 yards.

Lakewood is supposed to be the primary challenger to Long Beach Poly in the Moore League.
