High school sports participation grows in California

In the latest participation survey in California, high school sports participation was up 2.9% since the previous survey in 2009, with an additional 21,006 students competing, raising the combined boys and girls total to 757,733.

Track and field had the biggest increase in participants at 9,122 (6,233 for boys, 2,889 for girls).

Football leads the top 10 boys’ sports with 103,921 participants, followed by track and field (57,922), soccer (47,078), basketball (43,176) and baseball (42,977).

Track and field is the top sport for girls at 44,625, followed by soccer (42,750), volleyball (39,122), basketball (32,839) and softball (32,816).

There were 1,517 CIF schools participating in the survey as part of the National Federation of State High School Associations.
