Garfield has been playing in City Section Division I for several years, and now Eastern League rival Los Angeles Roosevelt is ready to make the jump.

‘They wanted to move up last year,’ Coach Javier Cid said of his team. ‘The players really wanted to be challenged.’

Roosevelt played a scrimmage against St. Paul, and Cid is trying to get his players prepared for the mentality of facing the likes of Carson, Crenshaw, Dorsey, Narbonne and Venice in the playoffs.

The Roughriders are using an Oregon-like offense that will feature running quarterback Anthony Flores and the versatile Gilbert Herrera, a junior receiver-running back-safety who’s the fastest player on the team.
