Boys' basketball: Calabasas assistant Joe Frazier is in coma

August 28, 2011 |  1:00 pm

Joe Frazier, a former Cal State Northridge and Pasadena Muir basketball player who has been an assistant coach at Calabasas, is in a coma at Northridge Hospital Medical Center after suffering a head injury when he was involved in a hit-and-run accident while riding his motorcyle Thursday night, Calabasas Coach Jon Palarz said.

A hospital spokeswoman said Sunday he was listed in critical condition.

Palarz said in an email that witnesses told police that the driver of a light-colored, SUV-type vehicle ran a red light near the intersection of Ventura Boulevard and Wilbur Avenue in Tarzana. Frazier tried to avoid the collision but couldn't and was struck by the vehicle. The driver has not been found.

Frazier was wearing a helmet but suffered a head injury and underwent surgery, according to Palarz.

"Joe is not just a beloved coach within the Calabasas program, but he has been very active in the basketball community," Palarz said.
