Fans of West Valley League baseball figure to come out en force on Friday night at Birmingham, because the VIBL championship game will match neighborhood rivals Woodland Hills El Camino Real and Chatsworth after marvelous pitching performances in the semifinals.

El Camino Real’s Luke Laurita threw a six-hitter in a 1-0 victory over Simi Valley on Wednesday. Yannick Villanueva had two of El Camino Real’s three hits.

Chatsworth’s Kiefer Kofman threw a three-hitter, retiring 16 consecutive batters at one point, in a 4-0 victory over Simi Valley Royal. Kofman improved to 7-0 this summer and has hit four home runs, including two grand slams.

A pitcher to watch next season could be Simi Valley sophomore Matt Campbell. The 6-foot-4 Campbell struck out eight in five innings while allowing just two hits against El Camino Real. He was the Pioneers’ top pitcher on their freshman team and has done well all summer.

Friday’s 7 p.m. championship game will be the final baseball game of the summer for most of the players. And it should be a good one.

In the VIBL junior varsity championship game, Camarillo defeated Chatsworth, 6-5.
